Authorities in Cambridge are exploring after they state six pupils were sickened after smoking an e-cigarette Thursday in Cambridge-Isanti High School. Three of these students were taken to the hospital.
An email alert sent to parents from the school district Thursday read: “We wanted you to be aware that a health emergency took place at CIHS today.
Linda Wright is the parent of two students. She explained, in the beginning, she did not think much. But she watched lots of parents and got on networking.
“You’re not thinking this direction, and minutes later this stuff comes out on Facebook, and you’re in a panic,” Wright stated.
Friday, Cambridge Police Chief Todd Schuster affirmed on the telephone for 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS six female students became ill after smoking the e-cigarette. He explained the school resource officer in the high school analysed the capsule and decided it had been positive for THC–the compound in marijuana that provides people with a top. Schuster said the cartridge is now delivered to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension laboratory in St. Paul to decide if it contained any other materials.
Friday, a spokesperson for Cambridge-Isanti schools composed to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS in a statement:
“As you know due to data privacy, we are not able to share certain details. At this time, we continue to work with local law enforcement for details on what caused the medical situation. Our thoughts remain with all who are impacted by this unfortunate event.”
“This stuff does happen, but this was a huge incident as well,” Wright stated.
Wright said she is frustrated school officials did not release more details about what triggered the pupils to become sick to aid with her parenting in your home. She especially wanted the college to publish the fact that the episode involved e-cigarettes so she would assess her own children’s possessions.
The superintendent of Cambridge-Isanti schools delivered another message to parents Friday evening, but didn’t mention exactly what caused the women to get ill:
“We value open lines of communication and appreciate your understanding and support. As we shared yesterday, there was a medical emergency at the high school that involved students. We keep everyone impacted in our thoughts and well wishes. While it is understandable, there are questions and concerns; we are unable to share certain details due to data privacy laws. We are also mindful during these types of circumstances to respect the privacy of families directly involved,” Dr Steve Gibbs wrote.
“We are proud of those who helped us through this unfortunate event. Our staff acted quickly and were able to work with emergency responders to address the situation. Local law enforcement has been working through an on-going investigation. It is by working with one another that we can keep a positive and healthy learning environment in our school. If at any time you or your child have concerns, please contact me or any of our school counsellors or teachers,” Gibbs wrote at the alert to parents.
As of Friday evening, the college district and police department were unable to supply an update on the state of the pupils involved.
